Excel Tips Tutorial: How to Use Format Painter to Copy and Paste Cell Formats
The easiest way to copy cell formatting such as fill colors, borders and text formats is to use the Format Painter command. The Format Painter command can be found in the Home tab in the Clipboard.
To copy and paste cell format without copying and pasting the cell content:
- Select the cell that contains the formatting you want to copy.
- Click the Format Painter button and your cursor will change its shape into a cross and a paintbrush.
- Now while holding your left click button drag the cross and paintbrush across the range of cells that you want to paste the cell formatting to and release the click button. You range of cells should now be formatted as the cell the formatting was copied from.
